Revealing your 2017 Be Local Awards winners

November 23, 2017

From August 8-October 29 Calgarians voted for their favourite REAP businesses on our website. We’d like to extend our congratulations to:

Favourite micro business – JMK Admin Services
Favourite small business – Intrinsi
Favourite medium-large business – DIRTT Environmental Solutions
Favourite non-profit -- Calgary Reads
Favourite All-Star – Community Natural Foods

In addition to your favourites, we’re recognizing four local businesses that are going above and beyond through four separate leadership awards that recognize a holistic approach to energy conservation, strengthening the local economy through triple bottom line business models, fighting poverty, and B Corp certification. Our partner organizations - Bullfrog Power, Thrive, Vibrant Communities Calgary, and BDC respectively - determined these winners based on their selection criteria:

Bullfrog Power has named TreeEra the Encompassing Energy Leader for its user-friendly approach to saving the environment by planting trees.
Thrive has named Universal Access the Community Economy Leader for its work to create a more inclusive world for people of all abilities.
Vibrant Communities Calgary has named Community Natural Foods the Empowering Communities Leader for its commitment to creating an inclusive, unbiased hiring policy to coincide with its corporate culture.
Business Development Bank of Canada has named BluPlanet Recycling the B Corp Leader for its commitment to reducing waste in Calgary while also promoting giving back to the community, and looking out for its employees’ wellbeing.

We’d like to thank our presenting sponsor, First Calgary Financial, for their continuous support of REAP’s Be Local Awards for five years running, as well as all of our leadership award partners and Ingrid Kue Photography.

And thank you for voting! Your support for local business is making our city a more vibrant place.

Sustainability for Breakfast presents "Forging Business Culture"

Connectivity, job automation and the intensifying search for more meaningful consumerism are driving the emergence of what Trendwatching calls “glass box brands”. Any of you who are on social media will understand what this means – there is no longer a dividing line between internal and external communications when it comes to your brand. What your employees experience, your customer also experiences, immediately, through social media, so it’s more important than ever to actively create your culture.

Employee Engagement has fast become the most pivotal business issue of our time. With over 3/4 of employees operating at various levels of disengagement nationally, there will be two types of leaders in the coming decade; those who learn how to engage their employees and those whose businesses will simply fail.

Shane Wallace, CEO of Culturesmith Inc., will share how to intentionally forge a business culture that will attract and keep customers and employees who share your values, so that you can grow your business.

About Shane Wallace:

Shane works with Entrepreneurs and C-suite Executives of rapidly scaling enterprises to craft the type bulletproof Corporate Cultures needed to inspire their people to bring forth more discretionary effort daily.

As a Speaker he is driven to educate Leaders as to the size and scope of the Engagement Epidemic, and inspire them to take action by providing real, tangible strategies that they can implement with minimal cost and effort.

As a Thought Leader, his aim is to add shape to the concepts of Culture and Engagement, to pull them from the ether and provide a set of tools you can use to create meaningful, rewarding and sustainable businesses.
