Calgary Dollars night market a “Little Bit of Everything”

Third annual night market celebrates community

The Arusha Centre is celebrating the end of summer with a bang at its third-annual Little Bit of Everything Night Market in Falconridge.

“We set out to host this market to bring community events to our people in the suburban Northeast,” says Theresa Jalotjot, Calgary Dollars representative.

The market, held in partnership with a Social Worker from the City of Calgary, Northeast Family Connections, Falconridge Castleridge Community Association will bring together members from the surrounding suburban neighbourhoods to partake in music, food, shopping, and pedal-powered entertainment provided by the Arusha Centre’s projects: Calgary Dollars -- a complementary currency to facilitate shopping locally and providing grants to local projects, and Open Streets -- arts and music powered by bikes.

It’s all part of the Arusha Centre’s mission to “inspire and support communities to connect, gather, and create a socially, economically, and environmentally just future.”

The market has amassed 25 local vendors for this year’s event representing Canada’s diverse culture. Theresa is especially excited for Bright Swan Creations by Pearl, an Indigenous artist crafting “gorgeous” beaded jewelry inspired by her heritage. Several vendors at the Little Bit of Everything Night Market accept Calgary Dollars as payment, and the market itself is free to attend to lift barriers for anyone hoping to attend.

“Five dollars can be a lot for some people,” Theresa explains. “Even if they don’t want to -- or can’t -- shop at the stalls we want to ensure everyone can come out to the event, meet their neighbours, and have fun with us.”
