Earlier this fall REAP announced some big changes to come in 2020, namely a merger with Thrive under the Be Local brand. Today we are pleased to announce that membership in Be Local will soon include a customer loyalty app, powered by Calgary Dollars.

Starting in 2020, all Be Local members will be set up on the Be Local app, which they can use to market products, services, and announcements while customers can use the app to purchase goods using Calgary Dollars. Businesses on the app need only accept a minimum 10% Calgary Dollars per purchase, the rest can be paid in federal currency as normal.

The app will function much like a typical banking app, but with the Calgary Dollars complementary currency in lieu of federal dollars. Built-in analytics will track marketing results and the impact of your Calgary Dollars’ circulation.

“For the first time, Be Local network businesses will have their own customer rewards program that can be tracked digitally to show the benefits for their business,” says Gerald Wheatley, Manager of Calgary Dollars.

“It’s a perfect match. Calgary Dollars supports locally-owned businesses to show the environmental, economic and social benefits of shopping at Calgary businesses.”

Calgary Dollars has been a local and complementary currency in Calgary for 25 years. Unlike federal currency, C$ can only be spent in Calgary which encourages local consumption, community building and economic resiliency. The City of Calgary itself accepts this currency, and business licences can be paid up to 50% in Calgary Dollars.

For those with Calgary Dollars to spare, the app will include a simple button to donate to Take Action Grants, Calgary Dollars’ community grants program that funds critical social and environmental work in Calgary including urban agriculture, social enterprises, and environmentalism.

“It’s never been easier to help the economy, the environment and the community,” says Stephanie Jackman, founder and board chair of REAP, “and get rewarded for your commitment to being local.”
