Sashay, Fillet! at Hotel Arts pairs culinary and drag talent

Hotel Arts hosts second annual culinary Pride event

For the second year in a row, Hotel Arts is proud to host Sashay, Fillet! -- Calgary Pride’s only culinary event, combining the talents of world-class chefs with the style and flair of drag performers, in partnership with Eat North on August 29.

“It’s just a really fun, unique way to combine these two highly creative worlds,” says Marketing Manager Carolyn Watson.

The event will pair up five chefs from local Alberta restaurants -- Peter Paiva of Raw Bar, Eric Mah of Purlieu, Bridgette Bar's Sterling Cummings, Tracy Little of The Sensory (Canmore) and London Local's Lindsay Porter (Edmonton) -- with five drag queens and kings from Calgary and Edmonton --  Felicia Bonée, Shane on You, Elektra Kute, The Marvelous Mo B. Dick, and Ivy League.

The pairs will have appetizer stations for attendees to snack on, where the chefs will have prepared dishes inspired by their partner’s drag style -- from signature colours to evocative vibes.

Sashay, Fillet! is an elimination-style competition, putting food and drag performances in front of an equally star-studded panel of judges from the culinary and drag worlds -- including Top Chef Canada and RuPaul’s Drag Race. The evening will be hosted by Top Chef Canada judge Mijune Pak and RuPaul’s Drag Race season 7 alum Jaidynn Diore Fierce.

"I'm so thrilled to be co-hosting this event again this year for Calgary Pride. Last year was non-stop entertainment and I was so touched by everyone who came to support this event," says Mijune in a press release from Eat North. "'Chef-meets-queen'...so much drama and fun in one room!"

In addition to being the sole culinary event in the Calgary Pride lineup, Sashay, Fillet!is also one of the few events open to all ages. “Being able to welcome all Calgarians into our hotel is so exciting,” Carolyn says.

“Hotel Arts is known for its culinary expertise, and much of our workforce is on the LGBTQ+ spectrum and we feel it’s so important to highlight and give back to this community,’” she says.
